Abstract: Τhe existence of alpha-helix via hydrogen bonding in polypeptide chain had been predicted by L. Pauling in 1951. To understand its stability and energetics, J. A. Schellman proposed the very first statistical thermodynamic model for alpha-helix formation in 1958. The model shared a remarkable similarity with the 1d Ising model, and more general theory of linear cooperativity. Very soon, the theory of helix-coil transitions became a highly developed quantitative area, that includes DNA, of molecular biology and biophysical chemistry.
