Abstract: How do organisms maintain thermal stability? In this classic 1963 study, Hammel et al. redefined mammalian thermoregulation using control theory. The authors demonstrate that the hypothalamus acts as a proportional controller rather than a simple switch. By measuring physiological responses to manipulated hypothalamic temperatures, the study reveals that heat loss or production is proportional to the deviation from a "set-point". This work is one of the early and influential attempts to interpret physiological homeostasis using the language of feedback control, providing a historically important bridge between classical physiology and modern systems thinking.
