The 21st century has seen rapid development in biology, with basic research in life sciences continuously making significant breakthroughs. The development of science and technology has enabled humans to reach an unprecedentedly high level of understanding of life sciences.
In the new era, interdisciplinary integration is bound to become an inevitable trend and will effectively change human production and lifestyle. Upholding the open and inclusive spirit of Westlake University, characterized by “Excellence, Refinement, Research-oriented”, and taking advantage of the contemporary background of interdisciplinary frontiers, integration, and innovation, the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (CIS) of Westlake University, along with Prof. Fangzhou Xiao and Prof. Po-Yi Ho, has initiated and organized the Qbio Seminar series of academic activities. The aim is to understand the principles of biological systems through quantitative methods, promote interaction between interdisciplinary biological disciplines and emerging disciplines, and strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation among teachers and students from different fields.
The Qbio Seminar is usually held on Thursday afternoon of the third week of each month. A teacher or a student will give an academic report or presentation. The subsequent Q&A session invites guests to answer questions in depth. In addition, we have also specially launched the CIS Happy Hour to create a platform and space, enabling everyone to jointly explore the laws of life activities and the science of the essence of life in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.
In this QBio Seminar, Zhu Aoyu, a PhD candidate from Ho Po-Yi's laboratory, shared “Emergent simplicity of bacterial growth in complex environments”. The subsequent Q&A session further pushed the academic atmosphere to a climax, attracting teachers and students from different academic backgrounds to jointly conduct a brainstorming session full of intellectual collisions.
Since the start of the activity, many PIs and students have participated actively in our activities, including but not limited to the following: Prof. Chao Tang, Prof. Leihan Tang, Prof. Fangzhou Xiao, Prof. Zibo Chen, Prof. Hanqing Guo, Prof. Po-Yi Ho, Prof. Shouwen Wang, Prof. Tailin Wu, Prof. Jianyang Zeng, Prof. Yue Zhang, Prof. Zhennan Zhou, etc. If you are also willing to join the report list, please contact cis@westlake.edu.cn.
